How Often Should You Wash a New Born Baby?

  1. Spongebaths Only

    • Until the umbilical cord falls off, a baby should only be sponge bathed. After it has fallen off completely, normal baths can be started in shallow water with a mild soap. A newborn does not need to be bathed daily; in fact doing so will dry out her skin. Baths a few times a week are perfectly fine.

Dirty Babies Need To Be Cleaned

    • If your newborn is exploding out of diapers, violently spitting up all over himself or getting dirty otherwise, he may need frequent baths to keep him clean and rid him of unfavorable smells. If dirt remains on the skin, it can cause irritation resulting in acne or a rash.

    Bottom Line

    • Daily bathing is not necessary; every few days is sufficient except if the baby becomes overly dirty or you desire to start establishing a bedtime routine right away.
