How Much Weight Should a Baby Gain Per Week & Per Day?
-
Average Growth
-
During the first month, newborn babies grow about one ounce per day, and an average of five ounces per week. Most babies then gain about 1 to 2 pounds a month until month six.
-
Fluid loss will cause a drop in weight.
-
Babies grow quickly during their first six months of life. Babies are born with a build-up of extra fluid so it is typical to see the baby's weight drop a few ounces in the first days of life. If the newborn is healthy, expect to see a 7 to 10 percent drop in birth weight due to loss of this excess fluid. In about two weeks, a healthy baby will regain this weight.
Bottom Line
-
Growth is an indicator of good health so it is important to monitor the weight of your newborn. Rapid growth is normal during the first seven to ten days of life as well as at the three and six week marks. In fact, a baby's weight will triple during the first year.
