How Far Should a Puppy Lab Walk?

  1. Puppies Have Delicate Bones and Developing Muscles

    • While lab puppies are active and energetic, and require daily exercise, they should not be walked on a lead until they are at least three to four months old. Limit the amount of time to five minutes for each month of age, and begin lead training in familiar surroundings. Until they are 18 months old, bone and muscle development in labs is still ongoing.

    Provide Plenty of Excercise Opportunities

    • If possible, give your puppy the opportunity to run and play in a fenced-in yard, park (with supervision) or other safe spot daily. Playing with and training your puppy will strengthen the pet-owner bond.

    Bottom Line

    • Ask your veterinarian about your puppy's daily exercise needs and when and how often you should walk your puppy. Your vet will be able to provide specific advice based on the size, activity level and health of your lab puppy.
