How Long Before a Wedding Should Tuxes Be Ordered?

As soon as the bridesmaids' dresses are chosen, begin the process of picking out and ordering the tuxes. Consult the bride so that the tone, style and level of formality of the tuxes match that of the dresses. Don't put it off, because rental facilities often need the final order two months before the event in order to guarantee the tuxes will be ready on time.

Plan for a Group Fitting

  • Four to six months before the ceremony, plan for a group fitting, or measuring, for groomsmen, relatives and ushers at the tuxedo rental shop. If you're the procrastinating type, this can be as late as two months before, but no later to avoid the shop telling you that they don't have the stock for your big day. Make sure everyone from out of town knows where to go to be fitted, and how to get the information to you. A week before the shop’s deadline, call to make sure they have everyone’s measurements. They probably won’t, but then you’ll have a week to corral your less reliable friends. Don’t let them take their own measurements; that’s an invitation to disaster.

Try Everything On for Size

  • Two days before the ceremony, arrange for everyone to go with you to pick up the tuxes and try them on at the shop to make sure everything fits. Make sure that all the shoes, cummerbund or vest, cufflinks and tie are packed with each tux.
