Is the Nicotine Patch or Gum Better for Women?
-
Nicotine Patches
-
Nicotine patches are applied onto the skin, where it is absorbed into the body. A Stanford University study found that 17 percent of women using these patches in order to quit smoking were successful.
-
Nicotine Gum
-
Chewing nicotine gum releases nicotine into the mouth and absorbs it through through oral tissue. In a study performed at Stanford University, it was found that women were not able to quit smoking by using nicotine gum.
Bottom Line
-
Studies have shown that women respond better to the nicotine patches than they do to the gum. However, the 2008 Clinical Practice Guideline suggests that some people may be most successful when using both products together.
