What Size Heater Is Best for a 130 Gallon Aquarium?
-
Minimum Wattage
-
According to Aquarium Monsters, the minimum wattage required to heat a 130-gallon aquarium is 400 watts. This is sufficient when ambient room temperatures do not drop more than 9 degrees F below required aquarium temperature.
-
House Temperature Impact
-
When the difference between room and aquarium temperature increases, the heater must work harder. A 400-watt heater is not powerful enough to heat an aquarium appropriately when the room temperature drops more than 9 degrees F less than the aquarium temperature. 500 watts is necessary for differences up to 18 degrees F and 600 watts for differences up to 27 degrees F.
Bottom Line
-
The Tropical Tank recommends a 600-watt heater, or two 300-watt heaters, for a 130-gallon aquarium. Six hundred watts is powerful enough to heat a 130-gallon in most household temperatures. Two heaters placed at opposite ends of the tank allow for more even heating and added protection if one heater fails.
