How Many Hours Per Day Should Children Watch TV?
-
Limited Television Viewing
-
According to Kids Health, the American Academy of Pediatrics believes children 2 years-old and younger should "not watch any TV and that those older than 2 watch no more than 1 to 2 hours a day of quality programming." Less television time allows for proper brain development in younger children and other important children's developmental activities, like playing and reading.

Television Viewing Benefits
-
Watching quality television programs in moderation can have educational benefits. According to a 1995 University of Kansas study, children who watched educational programs on television had stronger math and verbal skills. However, studies have revealed that baby educational videos do not benefit babies developmentally and may do more harm than good.
Bottom Line
-
Daily television viewing time should be limited and program selection monitored to ensure quality programming is being watched. Children may learn new words and be exposed to new ideas, concepts, and cultures. However, the majority of their time should be geared toward mental, social, and physical activities.
