How Much Sand Should be Used to Install Brick Pavers?

  1. 1 1/2 Inches of Sand May be Enough

    • Most do-it-yourself guides recommend leveling no less than 1 1/2 inches of sand over a compacted bed of crushed granite to prepare a bed for brick pavers. Additional sand is needed to fill in the spaces between the pavers once the patio is laid.

    More May be Necessary

    • More sand may be necessary if low spots need to be filled in before installing the pavers.

    Bottom Line

    • It is better to have more than needed to finish the job than not enough. Purchase enough sand for at least a 2-inch layer beneath the pavers plus enough to fill in the spaces.
