How Much Fat Should I Eat a Day to Lose Weight?
-
Low-Fat Diet
-
Nutrition experts recommend a person eat no more than 30 percent of their calories from fat. A person trying to lose weight should stick to about 20 percent with no more than 7 percent of their total calories from saturated fat and no more than 1 percent from trans fat.
-
Moderate-Fat Diet
-
Researchers have found people on a moderate-fat diet of 30 to 35 percent are more likely to stay on their diets and maintain weight loss. A higher-fat diet decreases hunger. However, bad fats such as trans and saturated fats should still be replaced by monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.
Bottom Line
-
People who increase their dietary fat intake to as much as 35 percent may fare better than low-fat dieters if they focus on monounsaturated fats found in olive oil and avocados and polyunsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acid from corn, soybean and fish oils.
