How Far Down Should a Chandelier Hang?

Situate the bottom of the chandelier about 30 to 34 inches from the top of the dining table in a dining room with 8-foot ceilings. Hang chandeliers in taller dining rooms an additional 3 inches higher for every foot of ceiling height so the chandelier does not look disproportionately low.

Room Chandelier

Hang chandeliers with their bases at least 7 feet from the floor in foyers or other rooms where people walk under the chandelier. In especially tall rooms, such as two-story foyers, hang the chandelier so its base is about one-third of the way from the ceiling to the floor.

Bottom Line

Hang chandeliers no less than 30 inches above a table to leave room for centerpieces and visual lines and no less than 7 feet above the floor if people will walk under it. Chandeliers should hang higher in rooms with unusually high ceilings.
