Should I Get an Algae Sucker for My 10-Gallon Tank?
-
Small Tanks Don't Need Cleaning Crews
-
Algae eaters are necessary for large reef tanks that are impossible for a human to clean safely and adequately. Small tanks are easy to clean with an aquarium vacuum. Most species of algae eaters need more than 10 gallons of room. Also, any fish added to a tank adds waste to the tank, which is not wise for such a small aquarium.

Small Algae Eaters Exist
-
There are small algae eaters that work well in 10-gallon tanks. Small algae eaters are nice additions with the bonus of a bit of cleanup. Nerite snails and cherry shrimp do well in small tanks and are more effective algae eaters than any fish.
Bottom Line
-
While algae eaters are not required for a 10-gallon tank, they can be a nice addition. Algae eaters, however, should not take the place of tank cleaning. After adding small algae eaters like shrimp or snails, take care to not suck them up when vacuuming gravel.
