Which Is Better: LPN or RN?

  1. Licensed Practical Nurses

    • Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) train in state-licensed schools, usually for one year and must pass a national exam. LPNs usually work under doctors and registered nurses, and have many duties, including monitoring medical equipment, feeding infants and collecting samples for tests. According to the U.S. Department of Labor in 2008, the median annual income for an LPN was $39,030.

    Registered Nurses

    • Registered nurses (RNs) typically train at state-licensed schools to get their associate or bachelor's degree in nursing, taking about two to four years to complete. Some RNs participate in a diploma program offered by a hospital. All RNs must pass a national nursing exam. Most RNs work under doctors and provide patient care, such as starting IVs and administering medicines. According to the U.S. Department of Labor in 2008, the median annual income for an RN was $62,450.

    Bottom Line

    • RNs are more intensively trained, have more responsibilities and therefore make more money. If you need a job quickly, become an LPN. If you aspire to become an RN late, enter an LPN to RN training program. In addition, if you get an associate degree in nursing, you can later attend school to get your bachelor's or even a master's degree in nursing.
