To lose weight effectively, the calories you burn from physical activities must be higher than the calories from food you consume. According to Mayo Clinic, 3,500 calories equal 1 pound of fat, so it is recommended that a person walk 3 to 4 miles daily, at moderate intensity, to burn those calories for weight loss.

According to Good House Keeping, taking 10,000 steps a day, which converts to between 4.5 to 5 miles keeps you healthy and assists you in losing weight. These miles can be broken down into several parts. Good Housekeeping, recommends breaking it down into three 20 minutes walks and two 30 minutes walks.
