How Big Should a Motorcycle Be to Pull a Trailer?
-
Size Is Not Important If It's Balanced Properly
-
Factory-made single-wheel motorcycle trailers are designed to lean with your motorcycle and apply almost no additional drag to the bike. According to Professor Sam Liles, the problem with loading a motorcycle with the addition of a trailer is improper weight distribution and the resultant handling problems. Attached properly, a trailer is an option for any roadworthy motorcycle.
-
Minimum Performance Standards Must Be Maintained
-
Safety dictates that the motorcycle/trailer combination must attain roadworthy speed in a reasonable period of time and stop within a safe distance. If the combined weight of the trailer and cargo measured at the "tongue" of the trailer causes the maximum weight capacity of the motorcycle to be exceeded, the trailer may not be used. Motorcycle maximum weight capacity increases with a motorcycle's size.
Bottom Line
-
The safest motorcycle/trailer configuration is one that affects the handling and stability of the motorcycle the least. Weight, size and performance limitations of the cycle/trailer combination must be studied carefully before attaching any trailer to a motorcycle. The combined motorcycle and tongue weight of the trailer must be within the maximum stated weight capacity of the motorcycle as determined by the manufacturer.
