How Big of a Pot Should I Use to Plant My Herbs?
-
General Guidelines
-
Herbs generally have a slightly larger root system than their top-growth, according to University of Utah. Keep that in mind when choosing containers. A general guideline is to give each plant 1 gallon of potting mix.
-
Indoor Growing
-
Herbs grown indoors over the winter will grow less than those growing outside during the summer, and manage fine in a smaller pot.
Bottom Line
-
When in doubt, choose a larger pot. A 12-inch pot, for example, can accommodate three or four plants. Control the growth of herbs by snipping them back, but re-pot them if growth seems to be dwindling or if you notice roots growing out the bottom of the pot.
