How Often Should You Water Tomato Plants Grown in a Container on the Porch?
-
Once Per Day
-
The Texas A&M University AgriLIFE Extension recommends watering tomatoes grown in containers once per day. Most containers dry out quicker than regular garden beds, so frequent watering keeps your tomatoes growing and producing at their prime.

Water Needs Vary
-
The extension also points out, however, that some containers don't drain well, and daily watering can drown the roots of your plants. The temperature, type of soil and type of container can all affect how often your tomato needs to be watered. Instead of following a one-size-fits-all routine, the North Dakota State University Extension service recommends learning how your particular container behaves and watering in accordance with that.
Bottom Line
-
When you stick your finger into the top inch of soil in your tomato container and no particles stick to your finger, it is too dry, according to the North Dakota State University Extension. Tomatoes need good access to water, so this means it is time to water. Over time, you'll be able to better predict when your plants need water.
