For a traditional tall flower arrangement, the vase should be six to 12 inches tall. The vase should be at least half as tall as the flowers to provide proper support. If your flowers are too long for the vase, trim the stems to an acceptable length. If the flowers are too short for the vase, select another vase size. Tall flower arrangements feature long lengths of stem that reach to the top of the vase, where a brilliant bloom of flowers explodes out of the opening.

For a shorter, less prominent floral arrangement, the vase should be three to six inches tall. These vases generally feature a rounded or square shape and allow for a crisp, neat flower display. Again, the flowers should be twice as tall as the vase, or slightly shorter for a more compact look. When arranging flowers in a short vase, the blooms should overwhelm the top of the vase. Unlike a tall flower arrangement, gaps and spaces between flowers look awkward in a short arrangement.
