How Often Should Geraniums be Watered?

Watering Geraniums
-
Geraniums need moderate water for optimal growth. According to Deborah L. Brown, professor at the University of Minnesota Extension, you should feel the soil to determine when to water your geraniums. If the soil feels dry to the touch, water the plant thoroughly. If the soil is moist, wait to water your plant.

Consequences of Over-Watering
-
Geraniums that are over-watered might suffer from root rot. Root rot can lead to dropped leaves, wilted flowers and death of your geranium plant. To help prevent root rot, the "Western Garden Book" recommends that you plant your geranium in a pot with good drainage filled with fast draining soil.
Bottom Line
-
Allow the soil of your geranium to dry out before you water it. Geraniums are much more tolerant of too little water than too much water. The best way to tell when to water your geranium is by feeling the soil with your hand.
