How High Should I Hang My Exterior Wall Light?
-
General Height Recommendations
-
An exterior wall light brings a warm ambiance to the home while illuminating the entryway. Lamps Plus states, "The height of an outdoor wall light should be approximately one-third the height of the door. If you use lights on either side of the door the height can be one-quarter the height." This height not only provides enough lighting for you to see, but also give the home a welcoming appearance.

Lights for Safety
-
Outdoor wall lights for safety only are hung much higher than the general recommendations. Mounted close to the roof, they light a larger area than typical, decorative outdoor lights--a light mounted close to a garage roof brightens the driveway so a driver can see better in the dark, and a floodlight is used rather than a decorative light.
Bottom Line
-
A decorative outdoor wall light should be hung at a height equivalent to one-third the height of the door (or one-quarter if placed on either side of the door) for the best visual appeal. To light a larger area for safety reasons, a higher wattage should be used and placed much higher.
