Should a Confederate Rose Be Trimmed?

  1. Plant Health

    • Old Confederate rose stems should be cut back to a height of several inches from the ground at the end of the growing season, according to Dr. William C. Welch, professor and landscape horticulturist at Texas A&M University. This allows new stems to quickly grow again in the spring.

    Aesthetic Considerations.

    • Rose bushes often need pruning to achieve the best possible appearance, according to the University of Florida. Prune as desired to achieve the proper shape, looking especially for old stems that no longer produce foliage and flowers.

    Bottom Line

    • Confederate roses should be cut down at the end of the season for proper growth and further pruned as needed for the sake of appearance.
