Nickel-based battery packs for laptops require a formation process before use; that is, users were advised to fully charge the battery pack before using the battery. This process took one to three hours. However, lithium-ion battery technology requires no such process.

HP laptops are equipped with lithium-ion batteries. These batteries hold the charge better, are more lightweight than the nickel-based, and discharge more slowly. You do not need to fully charge a lithium-ion battery before you use it. A full charge time will vary, depending on the existing charge and your power options for your laptop.

Battery storage capacity degrades over time and with use. Temperature and humidity also affect battery capacity and charge time. Basically, the less efficient your battery, the longer time is required to charge it. HP laptops use lithium-based batteries that do not require you to fully charge the battery before using the laptop. HP does recommend that you calibrate the battery every three months.
