Furnace Fans Improve Air Quality
Running a furnace fan can improve air quality. According to Don Fugler of Home Energy Magazine Online, “Running the furnace fan continuously ensures that the filter is continuously working to remove particles.” Fugler says that people with asthma, allergies or other health problems that require improved air quality may benefit from running the fan constantly.
Constantly Running Fans Increases Energy Use
Furnace fans that run constantly use a lot of energy and will make your electric bill go up. Focus on Energy recommends switching the furnace fan to “auto” mode to reduce the total hours of operation and decrease your energy bill.
How often you run your furnace fan depends on your preferences. The more you run the furnace fan, the higher your electric bills will be. Fugler notes: “There may be people for whom it is reasonable to spend more than $200 to upgrade their filter and continuously run their furnace fan…but many people will decide that the air quality improvements are not worth the added expense.”
