What Is a Good Substitute for Turmeric?

  1. Flavor Changes

    • Saffron also gives the same bright color to food and can be used in the same recipes as turmeric with a similar flavor, but no spice has a flavor that is identical to turmeric. Turmeric is also sometimes substituted for saffron because it is less expensive. Annatto seeds can be used after steeping them in boiling water for approximately 20 minutes using only the remaining water.

    Color Appearance

    • Turmeric is a vivid yellow color and often gives curries their distinctive yellow hue. Dry mustard can impart the same color as turmeric in a variety of recipes.

    Bottom Line

    • While there are a couple decent substitutes for turmeric in recipes, it has a very distinctive flavor that is only closely mirrored by saffron, which is very expensive. If you cannot find turmeric or saffron, leave the turmeric out of the recipe as any other additions may make the recipe taste completely different.
