How Old Should a Puppy Be for House Training?
-
At Seven Weeks Old
-
The conventional time for starting house training is seven or eight weeks old, because this is the time puppies are usually sent home to their new owners or bought in pet stores. Puppies learn basic commands and house training very quickly at this age.
-
As Soon as Puppy Can Walk Steadily
-
Puppies begin walking by three weeks old and will often try to follow their mothers by four weeks old. The mother dog can help teach house training to her puppies. Let the puppies follow the mother or bring them outside with the mother whenever she has to relieve herself.
Bottom Line
-
Puppies can learn the basic idea at five weeks of age if their mothers are allowed outside. However, mother dogs in puppy mills are not able to leave their cages for any reason, and so cannot teach their puppies house training. It is never too late for house training.
