How Long Should You Broil Snapper Fish?

  1. 10 Minutes Per Inch of Thickness

    • The most accepted rule for broiling snapper is to cook your fish on the lowest rack in your broiler for 10 minutes per inch of thickness. By this reasoning, if your snapper fillet is 1 inch thick, you would broil it for 10 minutes, and if it is 1.5 inches thick, it would be in the broiler for 15 minutes, and so on. If your fillet is less than 1/2 inch thick, it does not need to be turned during the cooking time; if it is over 1/2 inch thick, it should be turned halfway through the cooking time.

10 Minutes Per Half Inch of Thickness

    • There are some recipes that will call for 10 minutes in a broiler for a 1/2-inch-thick piece of fish. In this case the fillet should not be turned during the cooking time.

    Bottom Line

    • Snapper fish is delicate and should not be overcooked. Broiling your fish for 10 minutes per inch of thickness will allow you to make sure that your fish is cooked through but not overdone.
