How Many Times Should I Breed a Dog?

  1. It's Different for Male and Female Dogs

    • Naturally, the strain of carrying and delivering a litter of puppies is much greater than the effort of simply siring a litter. Therefore healthy male dogs can be used for breeding for as long as they are physically capable and willing. Females ideally should have no more than two litters in their lifetime.

    Dog Overpopulation

    • There is already a huge problem with dog overpopulation. It would be great if we could find a home for all of the abandoned dogs before breeding more puppies, but it's unrealistic. Irresponsible breeders and puppy farmers create unhealthy specimens of a breed, while good breeders strive to improve the breed.

    Bottom Line

    • People breed dogs for a variety of reasons, some good and some bad. Many breed enthusiasts want to continue the bloodline of their own dog, but they do so responsibly by breeding the same bitch no more than twice. Those motivated by money will sadly overbreed a bitch, which physically damages her and creates unhealthy pups.
