How High Should I Place a Mirror on My Wall

Eye Level for Functionality

  • A mirror is designed to be used and should be placed with the center at eye level. For the average adult this is around 57 to 60 inches from the floor. For a 24-inch mirror, the top of the mirror should hang 69 to 72 inches above the floor.

Exceptions to the Rule

  • Mirrors can also hang at non-standard heights: in children's rooms they should be at child's eye level. If you are tall, short, or a wheelchair user, you may need mirrors at custom level. If used to reflect features; make rooms appear larger or to reflect light, hang at the height that best achieves that function.

Bottom Line

  • Mirrors should hang at the height where they best fulfill their purpose while harmonizing with other design features. Have someone hold the mirror in position; test eye-level functionality and step back to see how it looks. Alternatively, stick a paper silhouette where you believe you want the mirror, step back and test.
