Mechanical Filters Last

The mechanical section of most fish filters is meant to strain out large particles and waste. They are not meant to be replaced entirely as much as periodically rinsed clean. Generally, this task can be done once per month, or every five weeks.

Check Frequently

Take a look at the mechanical filter media every time you perform your weekly water changes and general tank maintenance. If the media is clogged, dingy or if the tank has suffered an outbreak of illness, a sooner cleaning or replacement may be in order.
