Should I Start Out With an Acoustic Bass or an Electric Bass?

Acoustic Bass

An acoustic bass is perfect for adding the bass line to outdoor jam sessions with other players. Whether you're in a park, on a camping trip or in the back of a tour bus, an acoustic bass is far more geographically versatile than an electric. You won't need an amplifier either, so there's less to carry.

Electric Bass

An electric bass can produce a wide variety of tones and sounds using electronic effects. You can also be heard over the most enthusiastic drummer, so long as you have the right amp. Electric bass is appropriate for almost all styles of music from folk to screamo. Electric basses are also easier to find in stores, so you'll be able to choose from a larger selection.

Bottom Line

If you want to play rootsy, organic music in outdoor settings, you'll be fine with an acoustic. For everything else an electric is better. Electric basses are also easier for beginners to learn with, as they tend to have thinner necks and lower actions.
