How Often Should I Change My Sleeping Pillows?
-
A High-Quality Pillow Can Last for Years
-
Martha Stewart recommends high-quality down or feather pillows for longevity, remarking that "I have pillows on my beds that are 10 to 15 years old." Lower-quality pillows, made from synthetic materials, do not tend to hold up as long. Heloise of Hints from Heloise says they should be replaced every few years; Stewart says three to four years.

It Depends on the Care
-
Both high-quality pillows and their lower-priced counterparts will last longer if they are properly cared for. Stewart recommends machine washing both natural and synthetic-filled pillows at least twice year, then drying on low heat in the dryer, which both dries and refluffs pillows. "Plump pillows daily when you make your bed, to keep the filling from becoming flattened," says Stewart.
Bottom Line
-
How often you replace your sleeping pillow will depend both on the quality of the pillow and how well it's cared for. Housekeeping mavens Heloise and Martha Stewart agree that it's time to change pillows when synthetic pillows have become lumpy or bumpy, or feather or down pillows have lost their loft.
