How High Should a Chair Be for Computer Work?
-
Set the Height for Proper Alignment
-
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), a desk chair should be at a height where your feet rest flat on the floor and the back of your knee is slightly higher than the front edge of the seat. If the chair is not adjustable, or if doing so would make it difficult to access the mouse and keyboard, OSHA recommends using footrests to get the feet and knees into proper alignment.
Consider Other Variables
-
In addition to the proper height, OSHA also recommends that each chair have a seat wide enough to accommodate the user and padded arm rests that allow the shoulders to rest in a natural position. The chair should also have lumbar support, forward/back seat adjustment and a five-point rolling base.
-
Bottom Line
-
According to OSHA, the height of the chair depends on the individual. It should be high enough to comfortably use the keyboard and mouse while allowing the feet to rest flat on the floor. If necessary, users can add footrests and lumbar pillows for extra support.
