How Often Should You Use a Neti Pot When Sick?
-
Frequent Use
-
Users of neti pots typically use them once or twice daily to remove pollen or infections. The system works by using salt water to cleanse the nasal cavity of blockage, bacteria and infections. This method is also known as saline irrigation.

Periodic Use
-
Dr. Talal M. Nsouli, of Washington's Watergate Allergy & Asthma Center believes that using saline irrigation will weaken your nasal immunities. This could lead to increased sinus infections. A study conducted by Dr. Nsouli and associates found that there was a 62 percent decrease in how often the panel came down with acute rhinosinusitis. These participants stopped using the irrigation method daily.
Bottom Line
-
While saline irrigation is appropriate to remove pollens and infections, users should not use it on a daily basis. Dr. Talal M. Nsouli suggests saline irrigation performed by the neti pot only be performed for three to seven days consecutively at any time. After that, users should take a break to restore nasal immunities before continuing its use.
