HDCD stands for High Definition Compatible Digital and refers to a digital processing technique that was originally developed by Pacific Microsonics and subsequently sold to Microsoft. The essential difference between HDCDs and regular audio CDs is that HDCD is encoded using a data word -- a fundamental unit of storage -- that is 20 binary digits, or bits, long rather than 16 bits.
