I need help!! My computer is running so slow, don't know what else to do and here is the problem. When i try to open any one of my desktop icons, it takes about 1/2-1 minute to open. When i try to close it, my screen would scroll in a downward motion before it completely closes, also it would stop responding. I've tried everything that i can think of and still don't know what the cause is, could it be that my hard drive is going bad?? Had this computer about 3-4 years now and the funny thing is my computer at work is alot older and works great.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, getting close to reformatting everything but afraid might lose some files of which i don't want to.

Need to know your PC's configuration (i.e. ram, OS, hard drive size etc) to help you out. Could be a bunch of stuff. Is it a laptop? Desktop? XP? Vista?

It could be a bunch of things. One very common cause is having lots of clutter on your desktop. Windows gets "confused" and will literally loose track of all those items--names, file types, icons, etc. So cleaning up your desktop and removing the clutter can help speed things up.
For example, on my parent's machine, they had literally 20 icons on their desktop. I made 4 folders and lumped many of those icons into those folders. Now windows only had fewer things to keep track of on the desktop and it speeded up the machine.
Another cause is your you've got too many temp files and/or they're too big. Windows has an accessory under System Tools to clean these out and empty your recycle bin. I would suggest you run this. It will also compress some little used files to help save space and speed thigs up.
One other thing you can do is run spyware removal software like Spybot and Ad-Aware. Ads, viruses, etc will all slow down your machine. By removing them, you can speed things up.
And lastly, you can check your hard drive to see if you need to defrag it.
