Cheap Travel

Cheap travel means different things to different people. To the backpacker, it is an ethos about trading time and comfort for money, because saving the travel budget means staying on the trail longer. Then there is the holiday-goer who is looking for a way to make a vacation more economical. Both share bargain-hunting tactics and the idea that adventure needn't have a high price tag.

    Additional Web Resources
    • Couchsurfing.org

This is the most famous and best-used site for organizing house swapping. It will prove an invaluable resource for finding decent people who are willing to put you up for free, but be aware you will be expected to reciprocate to remain a member of the couchsurfing community.

    • GoGlamping

Matt Gross at the New York Times and I both agree: Travelocity is a good bargain hunting index.

    • The Guardian's Boutique Hostel Index

Any last ditch effort to get transit costs down in North America should begin with Rideshare ads on Craigslist. Go to the city you are in, check for notices, and post your own if you need to.

    • HomeExchange.com

HomeExchange work on a similar principle as Couchsurfing, except you actually directly swap homes with someone. It requires more planning, but feels a little less dodgy, especially for people who aren't backpacking.

    • Kayak.com

Arguably the best site for cross-checking airfare prices.

    • Dealbase

This hotel database site gets a lot of thumbs up from media sources.

    • Farecase

A handy tool for predicting where air fares are going to go in the near future.

    • Wegolo.com

The hook for this air fare finder is that it includes ALL fees and taxes in the price.

It looks like things are settling into place for a Floyd Mayweather, Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao superfight. Money turned out to not be an issue, with the two fighters easily settling on a 50-50 split. That is unsurprising, since with $50 million in the pot to balk over not getting 60-40 or 55-45 would make the guy who walked away look like a duck-and-runner (the last fighter to be paid more than $25 million for a fight was Evander Holyfield when he took on Lennox Lewis in their first fight). The date is rumored to be March 13. The only sticking point now might be the insistence on the part of Manny Pacquiao that the fight be at a catchweight. Pacquiao, for all his hype, has never actually fought at the regulation 147 lbs. Mayweather has not fought below that weight since June 2005, and paid a de facto fine for not making the agreed-upon catchweight for his recent bout with Juan Manuel Marquez.

While budget air travel used to always mean flying Economy class, there are some options that have made Business class affordable on certain routes. For example, if you are looking at flying direct to London, Paris or Frankfurt from a major U.S. city, such as New York, Atlanta or Chicago, be sure to check out the travel options on Middle Eastern or Asian airlines. Air India offers a round-trip Business class ticket for New York to London for $1,100. When you consider that an Economy class ticket on a Western airline will cost between $800 and $900 for the same route, such an air fare becomes very competitive. After all, who wouldn't pay an extra $200 (if they have it) for a bigger seat, more leg room and better service?

A shopworn Roy Jones, Jr. was knocked out by Australian journeyman Danny Green on December 2nd. The fight was supposed to be a tune-up and primer for a rematch with Bernard Hopkins. Hopkins, who at 43 is still sharp enough to duke it out with the likes of Kelly Pavlik and triumph, would almost certainly crush Jones like an empty beer can. Of course, there is still talk of the fight going forward, but who would pay to watch it now?
