Reading the body language of your tabby cat is important to understanding your pet and giving it the appropriate care and attention it needs. There may be times when you wonder what to do when the cat glares at you with its ears flattened. You can often tell how a cat is thinking by its ears: when you see them go down, be careful, as that's a sign of trouble.
People often mistake tabby cats to be a cat breed. The term tabby denotes the dark, striped patterns on the coats of both domestic and wild cats. The tabby patterns are found in various cat breeds and they resemble the patterns on the ancient cats or the cat ancestors. These patterns may also be in the form of dots or whorls. These cats are characterized by the dark markings on the cheeks or face and patterns that resemble the wings of butterflies along their shoulders. They also have rings around the chest, tail and legs, and stripes on the sides.
Cats are actually more common than dogs in America, and more people have them as pets. As with dogs, the most common are mixed breeds. Many people are unaware, however, that there are actually three different "breeds" of mixed breeds. Additionally, one particular breed of purebred cats is identified as most popular by the Cat Fancier's Association.
Tabby cats are not a breed. The term "tabby cat" refers to the pattern on a cat's coat, which may be in the form of spots, swirls or stripes. The coloration and markings are found among several breeds of cat. The tabby pattern is common in domestic short-hair cats and mixed breeds. Four distinct types of tabby cats exist, based on the difference in markings and one type in which the tabby pattern is part of another color pattern, such as tortoiseshell.
Orange tabby cats come in many different shades of color, ranging from red to a more yellow-golden orange, and all of them have a pattern of stripes on their fur. These cats come in different breeds, both long- and short-haired. Depending on the early socialization of an orange tabby, its age and its breed, the cat may behave in a friendly, rambunctious or reserved manner.
Tabby cats are not a breed and their name is descriptive only. There are four patterns on tabby cats that are genetically distinctive. The cat's potential fur configurations are mackerel, ticked, spotted and classic. Cats of different breeds are born with these tabby coats. Another characteristic, distinctly tabby, is stripes on the forehead in the shape of an "M."
Considering a tabby a cat breed is a common mistake. It is actually a coat pattern that can be found in many breeds of domestic cat. Despite their great diversity, one feature that all tabbies share is the the "M" on their foreheads. Most breeds can include at least one form of tabby markings.
"A kitten is in the animal world what a rosebud is in the garden," said English poet Robert Southey. Breeders of kittens would agree that these animals bring beauty to their surroundings, along with plenty of energy and amusing antics. If you hope to own a purebred kitten, you'll find more than four dozen breeds eligible for championship competition in The International Cat Association (TICA). The organization suggests you research the breeds you're considering before deciding which type of kitten to buy.
A "domestic shorthair" is a descriptive term for a cat with a short, sleek coat and a mixed ancestry -- the equivalent of a mutt in the dog world. Purebreeds like Persians, Turkish Vans and Siamese must conform to certain standards. Domestic shorthair, or DSH, cats -- because of their mixed and often unknown heritage -- come in an amazing array of sizes, body types, colors and markings, including calico and tabby.
A Sphynx is a completely hairless cat breed. Many fall in love with this feline's nontraditional looks, and some of them decide to get into the business of breeding them. The best way to learn about becoming a good breeder is to get to know other breeders. Many are happy to help, because they love sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm for the breed, but there are some general tips to successfully breed a Sphynx cat.
Tabby kittens come in a variety of breeds, sizes, shapes and colors, but all of them have a pattern of stripes on their coats. Whether long-haired or short-haired, tabby kittens have pencil-like lines on the face, markings like eyeliner around the eyes and a tabby "M" on the forehead, according to the Cat Fanciers website. You can inspect your kitten's coat to determine its color pattern and main colors, to properly register it with a purebred association or group, or just for your own knowledge.

Domesticated cats are the most popular pet in the world, according to Scientific American. Globally, 600 million cats live with people and one-third of all American homes claim a feline member. Unfortunately, however, the domestic cat's prolific nature has made them overpopulate. Between 6 million and 8 million dogs and cats enter shelters each year, and about half of them are euthanized because of lack of space or resources to care for them, according to the Humane Society of the United States.
