De Haan is an enchanting beach resort created by Belgium's King Leopold II in the late 18th century. He hired German architects to design villas in the dunes, Hansel-and-Gretel houses, ivy-covered cottages, belle-époque mansions and traditional barns out of thatches, turrets, wood and stone. Albert Einstein hid out here for a short time after fleeing Hitler's Germany in 1933. It is the quietest of the towns along Belgium's coastline, but it has many excellent hotels.
Blankenberge, Belgium is a seaside resort town overlooking the North Sea, a 10-minute drive along the coast from the major port of Zeebrugge. Vissersstraat is two blocks back from Blankenberge's sandy beach, and the short street has a selection of restaurants. There are no hotels on Vissersstraat, but there is a varied choice of accommodation within a few minutes' walk. Blankenberge's attractions include the 400-yard long Belgium Pier and the Serpentarium, which, as well as snakes, includes reptiles, amphibians and spiders.
Zandvoorde is a small town in northern Belgium which is around four miles from the coast. It is a mainly residential town which is surrounded by farmland. The town has a few local shops, schools and banks, but no hotels. The closest hotels in the area are closer to the coast, in the seaside town of Oostende.
