If you're like most people -- the kind who read the little text box before the article text itself -- then you're probably thinking "What's with the 'moderately easy' rating on a motor-mount replacement article?" The answer, o scanner of documents, is that this job really isn't particularly difficult. But there's a caveat here: you have to have the right tool for the job. Without it, you can still do the job, but there's a good chance it'll turn into a nightmare of misaligned mounts and broken parts.
The 1999 Chevy Tahoe base model came with a 5.7-liter eight-cylinder engine and a four-speed automatic transmission. The engine in your Tahoe has two mounts, one on each side of the engine, that secure the engine to the frame. Over time the rubber bushings in the motor mounts can become worn causing excessive engine movement during idle and heavy engine load. Replacing either motor mount will require the engine be lifted enough to unbolt and remove the assemblies from between the engine and frame rails.
The 2005 Ford Five Hundred came with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine and a 6 speed automatic or constant velocity transmission. Your Five Hundred has a left and right engine mount that hold the engine to the vehicle. Both motor mounts are identical; however, the replacement process of each are slightly different. This procedure will involve lifting the engine enough to remove the engine mount, but is will within the realm of the home mechanic.
Ford’s answer to the Chevrolet Corvette was more of a personal luxury car than a sports car. The Thunderbird -- introduced in the fall of 1954 as a 1955 model -- had a full complement of interior luxury appointments that were either standard equipment or available at extra cost. Among the standard features was a steering wheel that could be adjusted up or down on the column depending on the owner’s choice. This feature carried over to the 1956 and 1957 Thunderbirds, as well.
Several things can cause or contribute to noise in the power steering pump when the steering wheel is turned. If the fluid level is too low in the power steering pump reservoir, the pump will make noise until the fluid level is corrected. Air in the system caused by improper fluid level, contaminated fluid, pinched hoses, binding in the suspension, a loose belt or a bad power steering pump can also cause an abnormal growling or screeching sound.. Some Ford power steering pumps exhibit a low pitch growl or buzzing noise when the wheel is turned. Ford uses more plastic…
Dodge produced two generations of Intrepid. First-generation Intrepids were produced from 1993 to 1997 and second-generation models were produced from 1998 to 2004. The Intrepid shares its platform with several other models – the Chrysler LHS, Concord, New Yorker, and the Eagle Vision. The 1997 Intrepid was powered by a base 3.3-liter or optional 3.5-liter V-6. The engine mounts – also called insulators – on the Intrepid are composed of rubber and metal. Over time, the rubber can break down and the mount will come apart. This allows excessive engine movement which can stress other mechanical components.
Depending on your perspective, an off-center steering wheel can be a truly infuriating experience, all the more so when the car doesn't pull to either direction. There's something about this condition that just seems to baffle the human mind; how can the car be going straight when the wheel is turned? But the reason for a steering wheel turn, and the subsequent fix, is actually pretty simple once you understand what went wrong.
The alternator on your boat is only slightly different from the one on your car’s engine. Both create electricity by induction, and both involve relative motion between copper windings and a set of fixed, permanent magnets. The automobile alternator's rotor is turned by the pulley on its face to generate its electromagnetic field. The approach used by an outboard's alternator is slightly different.
The air blowing out of the room vent owes its warmth to the work of an HVAC combustion motor. These motors produce the draft needed to generate fuel combustion, which results in the heat felt within a home’s living space. Troubleshooting an HVAC motor involves determining whether the motor’s gone bad or if another heating component is affecting its performance.
Based on the Chevy 350 engine, the Mercruiser 5.7 L 350 Mag MPI has many qualities in common with its landlubber cousin. You may not be able to gain access to the drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan. This means pumping the oil out of the crankcase rather than draining it unceremoniously into a pan. You also need to know the model year, stamped on the information plate on the starboard -- right -- cylinder head.
Tier III is an operational regulation of the California Air Resources Board; CARB. One of the duties of this agency is to regulate the maximum emissions levels produced by internal combustion engines allowable under California law. In common with all manufacturers, Honda engines must operate within the parameters of Tier III emissions regulations.
Normal day-to-day operation of a motor vehicle can leave the engine and its many components clogged with residue and buildup. Though carbon accumulation on spark plugs and other engine areas can inhibit the vehicle’s performance and even lead to expensive repairs, a number of fuel additives can quickly and efficiently remove this buildup and restore performance.
Motor bearings serve an essential function in engines by helping the parts of the engine assemble move in a circular fashion. Circular motion in turn generates torque, which helps drive engines. Torque in an HVAC heat pump provides power to turn the blower belt, which turns the blower fan and helps distribute air throughout the HVAC duct system. Old motor bearings can prevent the generation of torque and create friction in engines, leading to wear and tear.
“Keep It Simple, Stupid” are the watchwords of those who spend their lives on the water. It should be yours, too, when you rig and wire a 24-volt trolling motor. A battery box near the trolling motor takes up valuable space on a boat. When you figure you need a second battery box for the battery to start your outboard, it only makes sense to put all the batteries in one box all the way at the front, where fishing space isn’t at a premium. Once you mount the new battery box in your boat and load all three 12-volt…
A Craftsman edger is designed to improve the appearance of lawns. It uses a vertical blade to cut out the grass and roots that are growing out along the edges of the lawn to create a cleaner, trimmed look. The engine that the Craftsman gas edger uses is very similar to the small engines used by trimmers, leaf blowers and weed eaters. When gas is constantly leaking from these engines or the engine appears to have trouble idling, the problem is often a gas or carburetor issue.
With the proper reference document -- the engine operator's manual for your boat's engine -- and a bit of practice, you can immediately locate the port side of the carburetor on your boat's engine --whether your boat is powered by an outboard, an inboard or an inboard-outboard -- with no more than minimal effort.
A johnboat is too small to carry friends, their dogs and their decoys. A blind would get in the way or end up in the water with your dog's enthusiastic departure to retrieve the first duck. This makes transforming a johnboat into a duck boat a search. You have to find room for a dog and decoys, plus some storage for lunch and storage for ducks, in case you're both smart and lucky.
The sweep or steersman of a dragon boat uses the sweep oar (also known as a "tiller") to steer the boat. A sweep oar, unlike a rudder, can come out of the water for an out of water recovery. Sweep oars can be manufactured in a variety of materials, lengths, grip types and stiffness. Manufactured oars are much stronger and reliable for competitive dragon boat racing. For hobbyists, a sweep oar made at home can also suffice .
Gasoline-powered outboard motors without built-in fuel tanks must be connected to a remote fuel source. Many outboard manufacturers sell fuel tanks and fuel hose kits with the appropriate fittings built into the hose that will connect to their motors. Tanks with nonstandard fittings require a custom-built hose to complete the connection. Parts for building a fuel hose are available from outboard dealerships, marine hardware stores and even some of the better general hardware stores. You can assemble a fuel hose to connect your fuel tank to your outboard motor using basic tools.
Electric trolling motors provide a quiet and convenient way for boat owners to cruise slowly in shallow waters without running the main engine. Many trolling motors have clip-on battery connectors for easy installation and removal, while others might be wired into a foot control with a plug. Whether the boat has a 12-, 24- or 36-volt system, the best way to keep the wiring and motor from damage involves installing a circuit breaker between the battery and the motor. Installing a manual set, or automatic thermal set circuit breaker, will protect the motor and wiring from a sudden voltage overload.…
Outboard motors work very hard for their size and application. They typically run at advanced throttle most of the time. The environments in which they operate can range from fresh, brackish water to salt water. Outboard motors pick up fresh water from the lower unit and circulate it through the engine, using a water pump. This keeps the engine cool. When the boat sits on a trailer or has been put in storage, you must flush the engine to remove harmful contaminants. Using a flusher on an outboard also serves as a testing device, and it is part of preparing…
Radio Control boats, often referred to as RC boats, are miniature boats that are controlled remotely. While you may have played with these boats as a child, creating your own from basic materials can often be a both challenging and rewarding experience. While these boats can be controlled in more tame waters, such as a pond or pool, they can also be used in lakes and oceans, depending on the size and quality of the electronics being used in the boat itself.
The rear-engine Snapper riding lawnmower has been a common sight in suburban lawns for many years. As of 2011, the small mower has been in production for over 50 years. Its small design and quick steering allow it to go around obstacles easily, and its rear-mounted gasoline engine has enough power to spin the single cutting blade, as well as power the rear wheels. The steering is low effort and has a quick 1-to-1 ratio. The steering wheel is made from plastic and can be removed for repair or replacement.
Carpet usually becomes worn or stained after years of use. If one section becomes particularly bad and you have leftover carpet, remove the damaged piece and replace it with a new piece of the same carpet. When you replace a piece of carpet next to the baseboard, you will need to remove the baseboard first. This allows you space to cut out the old carpet and makes it easier to fit the new piece in place.
Awnings are used to shade exterior areas from direct sunlight and precipitation, thereby making them more enjoyable to use in a variety of conditions. They are also used to protect windows and interiors from direct sunlight, reducing heat transference and undesirable secondary effects, such as faded furniture and carpets. Motorized awnings have integral electric motors that open and close the awning in place of manual cranks. Many come with remote controls.
When a crack or hole develops in your Coleman crawdad plastic boat, it will turn the boat un-seaworthy. Not repairing the damage in a timely manner can cause the crack or hole to become larger, leaving you with a bigger problem. Using a path kit that contains glues is only a temporary fix that will not withstand several uses. Instead, choose a plastic boat repair kit that contains a KC welder and filler rod to permanently repair the damage to the Coleman crawdad plastic boat.
One of the simplest ways to power a homemade toy is with a rubber band. Although it is a low-tech power plant, it serves as a useful demonstration of how more sophisticated devices work. Like an electric motor attached to a battery, it uses stored energy to provide the toy with motive power. The only difference is that the stored energy is created by the rubber band's own elasticity. To power a bottle boat, you can insert a paddle wheel into a rubber band and wind it tightly to generate propulsion.
Backing a trailer into a driveway can be an intimidating task. However, the need for this skill arises more often than many people might think. Failure to master the task can cause damage to the trailer or to property around the driveway. Trailers move in the direction opposite to the way the steering wheel is turned when it is held at the top. Turning the wheel right makes the trailer move left and vice versa, which is counterintuitive to most people. A few simple techniques can make backing a trailer easier and safer.
The Honda Civic has economically moved people around since 1973. The “EX” trim level Civic did not debut until the 1990 model year, but it quickly shared the throne at the top of the Civic lineup with the Si model, which hit showrooms in 1985. The 1998 model year was one of the few years since 1985 that Honda did not offer the Si model. This lack of the Si model made the EX the lone “top dog” in the Civic lineup.
Mercury Marine's 1966 outboard engines, depending on the model, mounted in one of two ways. This means that, regardless of the size of the outboard, or whether it will be used as a "kicker" -- an auxiliary outboard, to assist a larger motor on a heavy boat -- or as the primary power source, its mounting is the same. The only difference lies in where on the boat you want to mount the outboard.
Deck-level gas fills are a luxury that can keep you or your passengers from tripping over a raised fill on a slick-and-rocking deck. Their installation can be done without retreating into the engine room. While the initial work doesn't require a great investment in time or effort, the whole project takes a week, minimum, because you must make the joint between the deck and the fuel fill watertight, the same as you do with other deck hardware.
Oftentimes, the interior paneling on older pickups left a lot of room for improvement, but most drivers didn’t care, as trucks were used as work vehicles. In newer trucks, such as the 2008 F-250, the interior panels hide all of the ugliness and give the truck its own sense of style. Even areas that are mostly out of view, such as the area under the steering wheel, have a trim panel over them. On the 2008 F-250, this panel under the steering wheel is called the steering column opening trim panel. Removing the steering column opening trim panel is not…
Keeping an outboard running without damage during sub-zero conditions requires ongoing maintenance on the part of the owner. This includes completing work after each use of the motor, and whenever the outboard is laid up for short periods. Since outboards have to perform in some extreme-cold applications -- from sportsmen in Alaska to research work in Antarctica -- outboard manufacturers test their outboards in cold conditions as part of the design and production process.
You don't need to be an old salt to operate a 15-horsepower Yamaha outboard. The safety procedures, like checking for fuel leaks -- a leaky fuel line can lead to a fire, or worse, an explosion -- are straightforward. The engine is equipped with a manual choke and an electric starter that operates on the push of a button rather than the turn of a key. It weighs in at just over 100 pounds, making it easier to mount and manage than its heavier cousins.
The 2003 Chevrolet Malibu steering column attaches to the steering rack and pinion. The rack and pinion is responsible for transferring the steering force to the wheels. Vibrations originating in the wheels, drive force transfer to the wheels or in the suspension can transfer through the rack and pinion to the steering column. Vibrations in the steering column are transferred to the steering wheel where it is felt by the driver.
Repairing a fender, the bumper you hang between boat and pier, is a small project. Repairing the gel-coat finish on a fender is an even smaller project, but still one to be attacked as if it's your reason for living. The gel-coat finish will not cure while exposed to air, so it's imperative that you cover the fender in an air-tight cocoon while it dries.
Don't think that being stuck in snow is only about getting your car rolling again. If you're stuck for long enough, especially if you have to repeatedly rock your car back and forth in very deep snow, then you might have problems emerge in your vehicle once you're back on the road. If the vehicle starts to tremor in the steering wheel, this problem likely is related to your wheel balance. This is something easily thrown off by prolonged time in a snowbank.
Spectrum boats were designed as an entry-level vessel used for fishing and water skiing. Originally manufactured by Mercury, the Spectrum became popular because of its low price. Due to environmental factors such as moisture, Spectrum boats require maintenance and repair, especially where wiring is concerned. A professional boat yard can replace the wiring but the cost is often high. Use a few basic wiring techniques to wire a 1990 Spectrum boat, saving the cost of hiring a boat yard.
Small outboard motors are used to take fishermen to their fishing sites and to move small sailboats into and away from docking areas. Because state and federal laws distinguish between motors that have less than 10 horsepower and more than 10 horsepower, most companies make an outboard motor in both size ranges. The most common sizes are 9.9 horsepower and 15 horsepower. Owners found out long ago that it is fairly easy to convert a 9.9-horsepower motor to a 15-horsepower motor.
The Yamaha 426 is a dirt bike that allows riders to perform stunts by riding on dirt hills. Occasionally, the parts of the bike's motor will become damaged and require rebuilding. The main aspect of rebuilding a Yamaha 426 motor, just like any other motor, is to replace the parts that are certain to become damaged over time. With the right repair kits and parts, you can do so easily.
When we say a small engine is "racing," we're saying that the gas-powered motor's rpms, or revolutions per minute, have sharply risen or sometimes that the rpms are fluctuating up and down rapidly. Either way, something's not right, and the first thing to look at is the throttle cable. If it's sticking or is otherwise damaged, adjust the throttle cable within its cable housing or replace it. You will not need prior lawn mower repair experience to do this task, even on a 25 horsepower Sears engine.
The aluminum edging applied to carpet, called a transition strip, covers the area where the carpet changes over to another type of carpet or another type of flooring. Over time, the carpet edge can detach from the aluminum strip or the strip may detach from the floor. Replacing the strip is only a matter of detaching the old one and installing a new one its place. If the subfloor is concrete, special adhesive is required.
Typically, carpet is installed on top of a subfloor. This subfloor can be made of a variety of materials, including Oriented Strand Board or OSB, plywood or even concrete with a plywood underlayment system. Once the subfloor goes bad, either through age, damage or water damage, it will need to be replaced.
A broken bridge ladder can leave you in a pickle if your boat has a fly bridge -- an upper steering location reached by the bridge ladder. On commercial vessels and large recreational vessels, the ladder is metal, but on smaller vessels, they are often wood or fiberglass-over-wood. Basically two side rails, held together by the treads, or steps, secure the ladder together. This allows you to remove the damaged part of the ladder, make a replacement part and return the new part to its place with little fuss.
A fiberglass paddle boat is a pedal boat that uses the foot pedals to turn the larger paddle that is located in the middle of the boat. While pedaling the paddles propels the boat forward and is an excellent form of exercise, your distance is limited by how far you can pedal. As an alternative to all that manual labor, you may want to consider attaching a small electric trolling motor to the boat to extend its range for fishing or swimming, or even to get back to shore in leisure without manual effort. While some paddle boats come with…
The Ranger boat company produces more than 40 different models of fishing boats across five series, including models that cater to bass, saltwater and multi-species fishing. The company uses standard, marine-grade carpet to cover the decks, steps and rod storage compartments of its watercraft. Ranger offers carpet in ash or beige shades, but cleaning procedures remain the same across colors.
Mercury Marine produced the Model 650 until 1976. The 1966 Mercury Model 650 outboard is a two-stroke, four-cylinder outboard that produces 65 horsepower at 5,300 rpm. Like many things on older outboards, connecting the remote control cables from your throttle and shifter remote to the throttle arm and shifter on the engine is no picnic. The process is similar, though, to making these same connections on the later 1977 Model 700 that replaced the 650. Good gloves save frustration and pain.
Replacing the Sea-Doo engine with a four-stroke, four-cylinder Yamaha engine will give you more power. The biggest problem when installing the Yamaha X4 engine in a Sea-Doo is mounting it properly, as you must have a significant amount of mechanical and small engine repair skills to complete this upgrade on the Sea-Doo. On the older Sea-Doo models you will even have to cut out some of the body to make the Yamaha engine fit. This kind of fabrication work takes a lot of experience and ingenuity.
Gel coats on boats can chip, crack or get scratched over time. If you have had your boat for a few years, it likely needs a new layer of this protective coating. Damage to the gel coat results from repeated contact with hard objects. Slight damage is not a major concern. But if it radiates from the bottom of the load-bearing equipment, check the installation and make any repairs needed, before reapplying gel coating on your boat's floor.
Jon boats are small boats with flat bottoms used for fishing. If you use your boat in water that have raised docks you'll have to use a stationary pre-built boat life or you'll have to purchase your own. These boat lifts vary in price and some can be extremely costly. If you're looking for a challenging project, you can create your own boat life or hoist using hardware material and a few tools.
