Love the orange palette!
Nice close up of a pom. These look like chrysanthemums (aka mums) to me!

Step 1: Gather 8 sheets of tissue paper. Fold the paper into an accordion. I found that Paper Source had a wider selection of decorative tissues than Michaels. A set of 8 pieces of paper was between $3-$4 each.

Step 2: Ensure your folds are creased. They don't need to be perfect but do ensure they're not larger than 1 1/2 inch wide.

Step 3: Tie the middle of your pom with floral wire. Step 4: Trim the ends of your pom to a desired shape. Round cuts make soft poms. Pointed cuts create a more edgy look. It helps to have some really sharp scissors for this part.

Step 6: GENTLY pull each individual sheet of tissue paper up and away from the gathered sheets. It's easy to accidentally tear the tissue paper (I did several times!) so take care. If you do tear the paper, continue carefully. Typically the tears wind up hidden in the end product.

In this picture, it's easy to see how I pulled up one sheet of tissue paper. For this pom I used multiple colors and I cut the stack of paper in half to make 2 smaller poms.

Step 7: When you are done pulling apart the tissue paper, you can see the center where the floral wire is holding everything together. This is where you could attach some fishing line or string for hanging your pom. Continue fluffing the paper to mask this.

Step 8: Step back and admire your pom! I love this rich deep blue color.

I had a lot of fun making these smaller multicolored poms with a hint of gold / silver!

About this board Share Board

I recently threw a birthday party for my 1 yr old baby boy! I needed to decorate the space and have always admired these poms from afar. I'd heard rumor that they were easy to make (though a friend of mine acquired some for her daughter's room on Etsy). I decided to give it a whirl with the help of some friends. Turns out they're a cinch!
