When you think about it, the beach is a natural place to take electronics. Many of your favorite gadgets – smartphone, Kindle, you name it – are made from sand (it’s true!), so it’s sort of like taking your technology for a visit back home. Personally, I’m very glad that tech doesn’t mind going outdoors, because I get bored easily, and I just can’t stay enthused for an entire day at the beach unless I’ve got something that takes batteries to keep me entertained.

Summer is in full swing, baby, and all I want to do is relax and enjoy the sunny days and warm nights. There is only one companion I need (besides my friends and family): a delicious glass of wine. There’s truly no better way to enjoy summer and completely let go of your worries, one glass at a time.
Now I’m no wine connoisseur, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have the ability to enjoy a fine glass. However, just like anything else, the more you educate yourself about what you taste, the better your palate will be at … Read More

One summer, I embarked on an adventure through Europe, just me and a carry-on roller bag. Towards the end of the trip, I found myself racing around the Paris Métro to make a train connection to Amsterdam. At one station I flew down the stairs, bag dragging behind me, trying to make it inside the subway train before it pulled away. I dove into the crowded compartment…and the doors closed on me. Half of my body was inside, and the other half was hanging from the platform, awaiting impending doom. Two French men pried the doors open and I fell … Read More

If there’s one food I crave 24/7, it’s definitely a delicious sushi roll. Soft, sticky rice and the salty seaweed wrapped around a variety of fabulous flavorful fish and vegetables is always an option for lunch in my book. It’s light and filling, pretty much perfect. In fact, the only things keeping me from satisfying my craving are price tags at most Japanese joints and the fact that I can’t make restaurant quality sushi myself. Well, at least that’s what I thought…
Until I found Kerry Nakayama‘s Spark board ”This is how I roll.” Kerry’s homemade sushi … Read More

Once the sun sets on the Fourth of July, our cul-de-sac transforms into what I can only assume is a pyrotechnician’s nightmare. The neighborhood dads set up the fireworks display table — a piece of scrap plywood propped up with two trashcans — in the middle of the street, while the kids vie for the best curbside seat. Amid the smoky, fireworks-induced haze, I can’t help but admit that this isn’t the safest way to celebrate the Fourth — did I mention that pinwheel fireworks are nailed to the “table” in such a way that they spin vertically when lit? … Read More
There probably isn’t anyone out there who suspects that sharing a name with a celebrity is a good thing. If you were unlucky enough to be born with a name like “Mark Wahlberg” you can expect a healthy dose of smirks and stares whenever someone asks your name. But at the end of the day, it’s just a minor nuisance, right?
Wrong. Here are five people who suffered greatly for sharing a name with a celebrity…

My childhood summer vacations had all the halcyon details of the movies, but my mom also made sure that my sisters and I kept our minds sharp. We had to participate in summer reading contests in the library, take art classes, and play educational computer games that reinforced our math and typing skills. I hated her for it at the time, of course, but in retrospect I see my mom’s pursuit of the best for us as the ultimate sign that she cared. And some of those books and classes stuck with me far longer than another aimless day at … Read More

You may be asking yourself, what is the most exciting thing about summer? Is it the unbelievably nice weather, the amount of time spent over a campfire, or the juicy grilled goods you get to consume every weekend? All of that sounds pretty exciting and definitely the top highlights of summer, but I look at summer as a time to get to work and cross off projects from my always expanding to-do list.
Glad to see I am not the only one! I’ve been inspired by all the projects I see taking place on Spark.

One year, my siblings and I pooled our allowance savings and paid the electric bill as our Father’s Day gift to our dad. It wasn’t the flashiest or most exciting present, but we liked the idea that we were checking something off his endless to-do list and giving him a brief opportunity to relax with us. Over the years, we’ve given him concert tickets, cameras and iPods, but that one gesture stands out as one of the most meaningful. Even something as small as an app that’s related to your dad’s interests or hobbies can make for a thoughtful Father’s … Read More

One summer, I decided to build a sled. Growing up in Southern California, I didn’t get to see much snow. My complete ignorance of winter sports and July’s unaccommodating weather only sharpened my interest. I fashioned my sleigh out of an old piece of metal, duct tape and string, then took it up to the top of the hill, kicked off and prepared for a breathless ride. I moved about one inch, and then fell over. For grown-ups, being productive usually means ticking items off a to-do list. But there’s something to be said for using summer’s extra hours to … Read More
