September is Healthy Aging Month, a time to think about ways we can implement positive changes to impact the future. It sounds intimidating, but it’s not about making giant lifestyle adjustments. Simple substitutions and additions to your normal routine could end up making a big difference! I just started walking to work (like really, just started—as in yesterday); it’s a built-in time for exercise that will save me money on gas and will leave me feeling a bit more sane (goodbye, Los Angeles traffic!). From cooking with fresher ingredients to trying out a new sport to wearing sunscreen every day, … Read More

Let’s face it—life can be hectic and unpredictable, and sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done. This past April was one of those times. It was the month of final exams, job interviews, graduation…and oh yeah, my birthday. Can you blame my poor roommate for putting off finding a present? Realizing she’d never make it to the mall in time, she logged online and headed for a popular deals site. Within minutes she found the perfect gift for me: a blanket she customized with a photo of my dog. I was ecstatic to receive … Read More

When our family entertains, chaos ensues. That’s because our house has an open floor plan with little separation between kid space and grown-up areas. Video games with sound effects galore and impromptu wrestling matches compete with discussions about PTA politics or whether “50 Shades of Gray” is really worth reading. So this year we will celebrate Labor Day by actually working. It’s time to convert our spare bedroom into a playroom so that the boys can go wild with “Where’s My Water?” behind closed doors. And then maybe, just maybe, the parents will get a chance to discuss all that … Read More

The line of fans seemed to extend for miles, wrapping along the perimeter of the stadium. Students covered in cardinal and gold face paint yelled and cheered, reciting odes to their beloved team. Young children in pint-sized jerseys galloped ahead of their grandparents, an older generation of fans sporting team caps worn down by years of loyalty. I stepped past security and through the threshold of the stadium, entering a completely foreign and exciting world. It was the start of freshman year and my first college football game ever. Little did I know that after just one afternoon in the … Read More

When I was in elementary school, the first thing I had to write every fall was “What I did on my summer vacation.” I stopped writing those essays a long time ago, but I still try to keep my friends and family informed about all of the exciting Johnson family exploits – we moved to Santa Monica! We went camping! We took the kids to Disneyland! But rather than sending emails to people one at a time, I broadcast the highlights of my future bestselling autobiography by posting the news to Facebook. If you want to get the most out … Read More

It wasn’t all that long ago that kids would lug their telegraph machine and bag of spare vacuum tubes off to school every morning. Technology keeps advancing, though, and these days it’s the rare child who still carries a backpack stuffed with reels of magnetic tape to hold the day’s homework assignments. Worried that you’re stocking up on the wrong kinds of gadgets and goodies for your high school or college-bound kids? Then you’ll want to check us out this week – not only have we rounded up popular tech, but we’ve also graded it so you know if it’s … Read More

Between my brother’s basketball practices, my sister’s social life, and my studies, we didn’t have time to make the annual trek to the family cabin one summer. The way my dad saw it, morale was low and pitching the family tent in the backyard for a night was the obvious solution. Although I wasn’t exactly excited about the idea of roughing it in the yard, it ended up being one of my favorite family vacations–even despite the sprinklers drenching us the next morning.

Lime green was my favorite color when I was a kid. Everything had to be green: the car, the computer, and of course, my bedroom. I begged my mom to repaint the walls in my favorite hue. I fancied it my sanctuary, a sacred place for all things a nine-year-old could need. She compromised by painting one of the walls lime green, and for the next few years, my fresh and bright bedroom was the envy of all my friends. Over time the purpose of the room shifted, from bedroom to gym to home office, but that lime green wall … Read More

From super creative projects to perfect pairings, these boards show true variety when in comes to wine inspiration.
Caitlin Bloom had a pretty creative take on a cork board. What better way to use those old wine bottle corks than to turn them into a rustic pin board!

Dawn Werner is thinking about amazing wine pairings in fabulous places. Grilled kabobs and a glass of Cabernet … Read More
