Fourth of July can be as easy as buying a few packages of hot dogs and buns. But because we’re all about learning how to do things ourselves here at eHow, we like to challenge ourselves—and we know you’re right there with us.
How to have a DIY 4th of July? To find out, we asked our resident experts, the editors of eHow, for their top recommendations. Here’s what they told us.
1. Grill Out with Marinated Spare Ribs
“The 4th of July is all about cookouts, and spare ribs are one of my all-time favorite grilled meats,” says eHow Food Editor Anna Roth. “They’re fatty and succulent in all the right ways.”
2. Get Your Herb Garden Started
A DIY barbecue isn’t complete without fresh herbs—preferably from right out of your own garden.
“I love to cook with fresh herbs, but never seem to use all of my purchased herbs before they go bad,” says Melissa Lauer, editor of eHow Home. “Growing my own garden is a great outdoor hobby and means I have fresh herbs whenever the mood strikes.”
Her favorite herb to cook with? Basil. “It goes with almost anything,” she explains. Melissa uses it on homemade pizza, julienning the herb and sprinkling it on the pizza when it’s fresh out of the oven.
Whether you’re outside gardening or taking in the great American pastime this July 4th, make sure you’re safe from the sun.
“Keep your cool while you enjoy the sunshine this weekend,” says eHow Health Editor Rochelle Abbott.
4. Chill Out with Raspberry-Banana Pops
As for me, I take a much less pragmatic approach to keeping cool over the July 4th weekend—I’ll take it frozen, with a hint of honey and plenty of raspberries, thank you very much. I’ll also be using the same Orka popsicle molds our blogger Christina Stanley used—because if they aren’t cool, I don’t know what is.
Here’s to a relaxing and DIY-filled Independence Day!
