    Clinical depression is a serious medical condition that adversely affects a person's thoughts, feelings and ability to function. While depressed individuals often exhibit abnormal brain functioning and chemical imbalances, researchers are cautious about stating whether the depression is a cause of these changes or a result of these changes, according to author and psychologist Prentiss Price. Individuals diagnosed with severe and life-threatening illnesses are more likely to be depressed than healthy individuals, but this can be attributed to the extreme emotional stress such a diagnosis can produce, rather than a strictly biological cause.
