Changing a flat roof will stop and prevent leaks caused by standing water. Flat roofs are generally made of layers of protective materials to prevent water or other elements from penetrating into the home or building. Over time, these materials may become damaged from the weather or rot from the general aging process. When this occurs, it becomes necessary to change the materials on the roof and rebuild the layers. If you can't afford to hire a roofing contractor, the roof might become a do-it-yourself project.
Mercury introduced Mountanieer SUV in 1997. It shares a platform with the Ford Explorer which was introduced intoduced in 1991. The 2002 Mountaineer was powered by a 4.0-liter V-6 or a 4.6-liter V-8, automatic or manual transmission and two- or four-wheel-drive. Mountaineers made after 2001 are fitted with fully independent four-wheel suspension in both two- or four-wheel-drive configurations. The front wheel bearings on the Mountaineer are integrated into a hub and bearing assembly that is replaced as a unit.
When rebuilding a bicycle, building the pedal gears is a key component to keeping the bike mobile. The gears are attached to the bicycle's back wheel by a horizontal bolt and connected to the front derailleur with a chain. The gears, part of the rear derailleur, consist of a series of sprockets that help regulate the tension in the pedals and the speed of the bicycle. When the rider changes gears, the derailleur moves across the sprockets to allow the bicycle to change gears.
The 2004 Volkswagen Jetta came equipped with light alloy or steel front wheels. Care must be taken to avoid corrosion buildup between the wheel hub and the wheel hub centering seat on the rim to prevent wheel alignment issues. The vehicle is equipped with reinforced jacking points on the frame to support the vehicle when it is lifted by a floor jack. Wheel bolts hold the rim on the hub, instead of the more common hub studs-and-lug nuts configuration.
The Massey Ferguson 275 is a vintage lawn tractor. Massey Ferguson was an offshoot of Massey-Harris until the company was purchased by AGCO in 1953. The Massey Ferguson 275 is equipped with very large wheels. However, if the tractor tire does go flat, it still has to be removed for it to be repaired. Tractor-tire removal is typically performed without removing the wheel from the axle, as it usually is with passenger vehicles.
Many different types of wheels, like those on a bike, have spokes. Find out how to draw spokes on a wheel with help from an artist in this free video clip.
Recessed ceiling panels present an entirely different appearance within a suspended ceiling than flat ceiling panels. With recessed panels, the surface takes on a more distinct appearance, with the gridwork standing out slightly against the installed panels, presenting a contrast that attracts the eye more readily. Since neither type of paneling is secured into pace, changing one for the other is a simple process. The removal takes seconds per panel, and the installation of all but the edge pieces only requires a quick positioning of the panel through the gridwork for mounting. The entire process is a quick one, usually…
Knowing how to change a tire could come in handy during an emergency. Learn how to change automobile tires with help from an expert in the automotive industry in this free video clip.
Heat enters the home through a number of means, from radiators to vents. Some of these devices provide both aesthetic and practical value. As a homeowner, you face decisions when replacing vents, ranging from the material of the vent to its design and type. Baseboard and flat vents constitute heat registers.
A flat tire of any level and in any situation can cause problems. If the tire in question is on a dolly, that can make your job or household task more difficult than it needs to be, especially when moving heavy appliances. Ensure your dolly tires are fully inflated to maximize your time and work efficiency, and to avoid injuries.
Shadow Raptor hubs are made for BMX-style bicycles. They spin using a 3/8-24 bearings set in the cartridge cylinder. Most repairs for any hub, Shadow Raptors included, are based on the bearings being dry or the grease being compromised. In order to repair this dried cartridge, it must be removed from the Shadow Raptor; this requires some special tools.
Honda recommends regular maintenance to keep its riding lawn mower tires operable. Use a lug wrench to check that the bolts are tight and check the air pressure with a tire gauge. Keep the tires filled to 14 psi in the front and 11 psi in the rear. Riding lawn mower tires wear out or become damaged the same way car tires do. When this happens, you must change the tire before using the lawn mower again.
The Grand Am's 1998 redesign didn't quite make it the American equivalent of BMW's 3-Series -- thank front-wheel-drive for that -- but it remains a stalwart offering that makes the best of what it was given. Most of the Grand Am's performance upgrades came as a boon to the car as a whole, but some put a bit too much stress on its Chevy Malibu underpinnings.
Your child’s stroller will likely take a lot of abuse in the years she uses it. Folding and unfolding the stroller and going over rough surfaces all contribute to the wear and tear of a stroller. The Chicco Cortina is designed to fit a baby from the newborn stage to preschool age. If you need to replace the stroller’s wheels during this time, doing so correctly can prevent future injury and frustration.
Tubeless tires reduce the rolling and actual weight of mountain bicycle wheels because there is no inner tube under the tire. As a general rule, a tubeless tire is harder to puncture, rip or crack than the inner tube-equipped counterparts. While stout, these tires do crack or rip after hard use and big hits from jumps or stunts. If you have a tubeless tire with a crack or tear, use a tested method of repair to give your tire further life on the trails.
The John Deere GT245 model is the largest of the company's GT series of tractors. Like all heavy-duty vehicles, it requires regular maintenance in order to keep it running in top shape. One problem that you will occasionally encounter if you operate your GT245 regularly on rough terrain or around industrial materials is a flat tire. Though the basic process behind changing the tire of a large tractor is similar to that of a smaller vehicle, take special care due to the weight of the vehicle and the configuration of the tire's rim.
Longboards require trucks and wheels that are distinct from any other type of skateboard. Longboard trucks are wider than those found on shortboards, with average widths ranging from 150 to 180mm. Wheels are made from urethane, and are generally larger than shortboard wheels, measuring between 60 to 100mm. The correct trucks and wheels allow you to ride safely and maximize speed, and give you the ability to perform tricks. Choose trucks on wheels based on the specific longboarding activities you enjoy.
When you bring your Troy-Bilt snowblower out of storage for the season, it might be necessary to inflate the tires. The tires lose air when the unit is in storage for a long period of time. When they lose air, sometimes the tire bead breaks free from the rim. Inflating a Troy-Bilt snowblower tire sometimes requires resetting the tire against the inside lip of the rim. Using a rachet strap is the best way to accomplish this on the hard rubber snowblower tires.
Reinflating a tubeless tire can be quite a challenge. A tubeless tire does not have an enclosed tube that can easily be inflated. With a tubeless tire, the air reservoir that must be filled is secured by the rim of the wheel. If the seal between the tire and the wheel is not secure, the tire will not inflate. The bead of the tire must seat inside the rim of the wheel before the tire will stay in place and stop leaking air.
The bicycle company Schwinn makes road, mountain, cruiser and hybrid bicycles. All of Schwinn's bicycles use a hard rims laced with dedicated length spokes. HD spokes are available in various weight gauges and are compatible with the Schwinn line of bikes. Lacing the HD spokes with Schwinn wheels follows the standard method of spoke lacing and wheel building. Many bicycle hobbyists consider lacing and building wheels more art than technical know-how, although both play key roles in the wheel-building process. Use a basic lacing formula to begin the Schwinn lacing procedure.
Mountain bikes take a real beating. They crash into rocks, sticks, pavement and dirt. The first thing that takes the brunt of the crash is the front fork tubes. Most mountain bikes are defined by brightly colored front forks and when they get scratched, it's highly noticeable. Fortunately, the front forks can be repainted. Sandpaper and paint can make your fork tubes look like new.
A hardtail frame, as opposed to a softtail frame, refers to a bicycle, usually a mountain bike, that does not have rear-end shock absorbers. To set up the rear wheel on a hardtail mountain bike, you will need to install the wheel onto the rear fork and set the chain on the rear wheel gear sprockets. This is a relatively simple and tool-free process for many mountain bikes that are equipped with a quick release, but otherwise all you need is a wrench.
Although flat-front cabinets can be great for storage and practical purposes, they lack any kind of flashy or decorative appeal. For this reason, you may want to consider converting your flat-front cabinets to beadboard. With a bit of woodworking, you should be able to add high-quality beadboard to your flat-front cabinets and give them a serious upgrade.
Matching a sprocket to a chain on your bicycle requires the use of a dial caliper in order to determine whether the chain will actually work with the sprocket. Although this is most commonly used on bicycles, there are other items, such as motorcycles, that may require checking on whether a sprocket works with a specific chain. Matching the two helps to avoid premature wear of the chain drive, and also helps to prevent derailing of the chain.
The tires on your Yard Machine are susceptible to debris just like your car tires. Sticks, rocks and other yard debris take their toll on your mower tires. Flat tires or tires showing wear, require replacement. Changing the front tires on a Yard Machine riding lawnmower is a bit different than your car, though. There are no lug nuts to contend with when removing the tire. However, unless you are purchasing new rims and tires, it is necessary to take the bad tires off the rims and mount new tires.
Drivers reporting unusual noises coming from their tires might have no real issues at hand, or it could be a sign of a larger problem. Noises can come in a several varieties, ranging from consistent pattern noise while driving on the road, to squeals and squeaks during acceleration. Out of the several potential reasons behind tires making noises, only a few are a cause for concern.
Repairing a flat tire or working on the brakes of your riding lawn mower requires removal of the rear wheel. The rear wheel on most lawn mowers uses a combination of washers and a square key to hold the wheel rim in place. The square key locks the rim and axle together so the wheel turns with the axle. Installing a lawn mower's rear wheel requires some prep work to the axle and reinstallation of the square key.
Tire wear is to a vehicle's suspension condition what spark plugs are to an engine and what blood sugar is to a diabetic; no matter what kind of car you have, tire wear patterns are smoking guns that indicate everything that might have gone wrong with tire settings, from inflation pressures to alignment settings. Reading tire wear is something of an art, but it's a vital one if you want to diagnose the problem that caused the wear in the first place.
Rim tape is a circular strip of plastic or textile material that is used to protect bicycle inner tubes from spoke punctures. The rim tape is installed along the circumference of the rim such that it acts as a barrier between the rim and inner tube. To fully understand the function of rim tape, it helps to understand the anatomy of a bicycle wheel.
Early in the 1800s, a German scientist by the name of Johann Bohnenberger "discovered" a device used to provide stability or maintain a fixed orientation. This contraption had no name until 1817, when the term "gyroscope" was coined. Whereas gyroscopes seemed to have no use initially, they're now used in racing cars, motor bikes, spinning tops, gyrocompasses and virtual reality headsets. These are only some of the many possible applications for gyroscopes. To learn more about gyroscopes, students can construct one using bicycle parts and the help of a volunteer.
Charles Goodyear's 1844 invention of vulcanization -- the process that makes rubber more elastic and resilient to swelling -- launched the introduction of rubber tires. The vulcanization process was so important to tire development that one of the largest tire manufacturers adopted his name -- Goodyear. Throughout the years, automotive tire manufacturers have made more technological advances, including Kevlar reinforcement, silica additives and high-efficiency rubber -- however, they are still not impervious to vibrations.
It is common knowledge among four-wheel drive enthusiasts that aired-down tires grip the terrain for improved rock-crawling ability. But those same rocks can sometimes pop a tubeless tire off its bead and cause an instantaneous flat tire. With the bead unseated, merely adding air is futile. First you must reseat the tire. You can do the job with a few common trail tools.
Literary characters are more than just catalysts who advance the plot. They also reflect the author's ideas about life, morality and beauty. When you analyze a character, you identify his choices, personality, decisions and motivations to determine what the author wants to communicate through his story. Protagonists often reflect characteristics that the author deems good and noble, while the antagonist displays negative traits.
The bottom bracket is a key element to a bicycle, whether it be road, mountain, cyclocross or BMX. This piece of equipment connects the two crank arms together and connects on the bottom portion of the frame between the front and rear wheel. Square-taper bottom brackets are found on older bicycles and can be classified as either ISO (most European-made bottom brackets) or JIS (Asian-made bottom brackets). With frequent cycling, the bottom bracket needs replacing after four or five years and it's best to do it yourself to save money and connect yourself with the bike that you ride and…
Cycling is a universal sport. Enthusiast from many countries enjoy the sport and develop their mastery using a wide variety of bicycle types with varying gear characteristics. According to The United Kingdom National Cyclists' Organization, in English speaking countries cycle gearing is usually measured in inches and the greater the gear the harder it is to push the cycle forward. In other countries cycle gearing is defined in terms of distance travelled per turn of the pedals, known as gear development and is measured in meters. Regardless of the location, cadence or rate per minute is determined from the components…
The derailleur hanger may look insignificant. However, this finger-size piece of metal does more than connect the derailleur to the bicycle frame; a properly aligned hanger is critical to smooth shifting. A crash or other accident can cause the hanger to bend, causing inaccurate transfer of the chain to the rear cogs. Installing a new hanger restores accuracy of shifting.
Modern compound bows are easily customized to suit their intended purpose. Many archery manufacturers offer complete bow packages, which include such items as custom quivers and grips. Traditional bows, such as recurves and longbows can also have their grip angle, color and shape modified by most bowyers (one who makes or sells bows). Grip color variations are mostly seen at 3-D shoots (events involving realistic animal targets set at unknown distances), where every aspect of the bow is modified. Other archers also change their grip color.
The Airzound air horn is a compressed air pressure powered bike horn that produces up to 115 decibels of sound without the use of cartridges or batteries. Instead, it uses pressurized air at up to 80 psi in a 500 ml water bottle-style canister. As you use the horn, air empties from the canister and the air pressure decreases. When you no longer get the desired horn blast effect, the canister will require a refill. Refilling your Airzound won't take long. You can refill it quickly via any standard Schrader valve-compatible bike pump.
Bicycles contain a part called a "headset." The headset connects the fork to the bicycle frame. The headset's bearings allow the fork to turn smoothly back and forth. A loosely-adjusted headset results in movement, or "play," between the various parts of the headset. To remove this play, first identify your type of headset. A threaded headset will have have a lock nut and adjustable bearing race that are octagonal in shape. These parts are located at the top half of the headset. A thread-less headset does not have these octagonal-shaped parts.
Sew-ups are a type of bicycle tire that do not need a tube. A regular tire will not hold air without a tube, whereas the sew-up is a tire as well as a tube. This makes sew-ups unique among tires. Sew-up bike tires are a single unit that is glued directly to the rim of the wheel. If you have a flat sew-up tire, you must strip the tire off completely and glue a new one back on. Doing this is a very simple process that was developed many years ago for bike racing, and is still used primarily by…
Your bicycle's derailleur shifts the chain from one gear to another. If the hanger upon which the derailleur is attached is bent, however, shifting will no longer be accurate. A bent derailleur hanger will often happen as a result of an accident, particularly if the bike falls on its right side, where the derailleur and its hanger are positioned. A tool called a derailleur alignment gauge (DAG) exists for checking the horizontal and vertical alignment of the derailleur hanger. Learn to use this tool to not only determine alignment, but also to correct any misalignment.
Multi-geared bicycles are often fitted with a device called a "cassette." The cassette is installed onto the freehub body, located on the right -- or drive-side -- of the rear bicycle wheel. Each cassette contains numerous sprockets, with each sprocket representing a particular gear. A 10-speed cassette contains 10 such sprockets. Properly installing your 10-speed cassette ensures smooth gear shifting performance.
Your bicycle stem serves a basic but essential purpose -- to connect the handlebar to the fork steerer. Because of the stem, the handlebar and fork steerer turn in unison providing the bicycle direction as desired. Among various designs of stem, direct-connect stems clamp directly around the fork steerer. Whether swapping one stem for another, or simply adjusting the height of the handlebars, learning to remove the stem is a crucial step for these procedures.
Bicycling is an exhilarating activity whether you're straddling a mountain bike, smashing through trees on a single track or just lolling down the boardwalk on a cruiser. Riding a bicycle is pure enjoyment until an object pierces the tire and punctures the tube. You have two options--take it to a bike shop or fix it yourself.
Campagnolo is an Italian bicycle component maker. Among "Campie's" components are the cassettes, the gear cluster found in the rear wheel of the bicycle. These gear clusters have a series of stacked, toothed metal rings that are held together via the hub. In dismantling the hub and cassette, what is being done is taking the individual gear rings off the solid hub. To dismantle the Campagnolo cassette, you first need to remove the cassette from the bicycle.
Calculating sprocket speed for a bicycle or any other sprocket-dependent vehicle depends on the angular speed and the linear speed of the associated wheel. The angular speed is the rate the wheel turns measured in revolutions per second, or radians per second. The linear speed is often referred to as normal speed; it is measured in meters per second or miles per hour. Since the sprocket is attached to a wheel, its linear speed is the angular speed of the wheel multiplied by the radius of the sprocket.
A damaged bike tire should be repaired before riding again. Even if there is some air, you run the risk of damaging the wheel's rims. Most of the time minor holes in a bike tire can be repaired with a patch kit. Keeping your bike in good condition will provide a more reliable form of transportation.
A motorcycle dolly is used to elevate the front wheel of the bike for repositioning it in a shop or garage. Some dollies are designed as front wheel roll-ons, while others elevate the entire motorcycle off the floor. Manufactured dollies have all the bells and whistles, and a price tag to match. In terms of basic design, you can make your own motorcycle dolly by retrofitting an inexpensive hand truck or appliance dolly. The only requirements are a few shop tools, some steel pipe and hardware.
If you are pedaling the crank feverishly, and everything looks fine, you've probably just dropped your chain. All bikes do it -- even the most expensive bikes drop the chain from their sprockets occasionally. It can happen at almost any point in your ride: everything is fine and then, no matter how much you crank, you have no power to the rear wheel. It's usually the result of a bad shift at the wrong time or shifting at the same time when you hit a bump. Whatever the cause, it's easy to fix.
