A certain amount of prep work is involved before you can actually stain the frame.
Stripping stain from wooden furniture doesn’t have to be labor-intensive if done properly. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money either. Most furniture is coated with stain and possibly a sealant, such as varnish or a thicker polyurethane coating. Both varnish and polyurethane coatings come off easily when stripped, along with furniture stain. Then the furniture can be left in its natural state, varnished or re-stained a different color. Paint can also be applied to wooden furniture as a substitute for stain.
Restaining furniture is a matter of creating a surface that new stain can stick to. Your white oak furniture can be restained any color that you choose without the need to completely strip it. Darker furniture requires more work to remove stain, particularly if you want to stain it a lighter color. To change stain colors without stripping your furniture, you have to get beyond the clear coat, or polyurethane. Your new stain will not form a bond with any type of clear-coat finish. Getting beyond the clear coat means you will must sand the entire surface of your furniture.
