Established in 1919, Bentley Motors began as a chassis and engine manufacturer, producing its first complete car in 1946. German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen AG has owned Bentley Motors since 1998. The company maintains its headquarters in Crewe, England, and employs 4,000 people as of November 2010. Bentley produced seven types of automobiles for the 2010 model year.
Bentley has a rich history that dates back to 1921, when founder W.O. Bentley translated his love for motorsports into the first publicly available Bentley: the 3-liter. Bentley has since weathered changes to its ownership and continues to build performance-oriented luxury automobiles in 2010.
Volkswagen AG owns and manufactures the Bentley luxury car. Bentley started as a much feared race car on European racing circuits but was plagued by financial trouble in its early years. Volkswagen is largely responsible for resurrecting Bentley after 67 years of neglect under its previous owners, Roll-Royce. Volkswagen also reintroduced the Bentley as a motorsport vehicle.
