If you like the tone of your bass but you wish that it were capable of putting out a stronger signal, you can install a gain knob into the body of your instrument. To do this you will need to convert your bass from a "passive" instrument to an "active" one, installing a battery-powered preamp inside the bass. A number of companies sell bass preamps for as little as $100; with some tools and some care, you can install these into your instrument yourself and save the money it would cost to pay someone to do it for you.
A bass guitar's electronic components, along with the tonal woods, strings and pickup placements, are responsible for creating the instrument's overall tone. Sometimes, issues arise from the electronics, leading many to replace the bass's pickups with newer ones as an upgrade to the instrument. Correctly soldered ground wires allow the electronics to work properly, without the audible hissing or buzzing noise that's associated with poorly soldered pickups and ground connections.
Fender Musical Corporation is credited with creating the world's first production electric bass guitar, the Precision, in the early 1950s. The company's second offering, the Jazz bass, was well received upon its inception a decade later. Both basses, as well as Fender's Mustang and Jaguar models, are still highly prized among players and collectors alike. There may be instances when Fender owners may need to perform some TLC to eliminate unwanted fret buzz, a result of a truss rod that needs adjusting.
