South Carolina, one of the original 13 colonies, has vast differences in topography from the coastline with it's many salt marshes to the Blue Ridge Region and the Sandhills Region, comprised of coastal dunes. The state is home to several major lakes and a variety of state parks, wildlife management areas, and public lands which feature ATV trails.
For many off-road enthusiasts, their ride of choice is the ATV or All-Terrain Vehicle. The name sums up why ATVs have become so popular: they can be ridden anywhere, under any conditions and in any season. Although a number of states have public ATV trails, many ATV riders prefer the wide array of facilities at private locations, such as those found in South Carolina.
Off-roaders visiting Deadwood, South Dakota, will find roughly 1.25 million acres of public land in the surrounding Black Hills National Forest. Hundreds of miles of primitive roads and ATV trails near Deadwood, South Dakota, are open to all ATVs, 4X4s, Jeeps and motorcycles, providing hours of off-roading fun with plenty of beautiful scenery.
Although South Carolina is well known for its coastal pleasures, there is no shortage of places for ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) enthusiasts to enjoy their sport as well. An ATV, or All-Terrain Vehicle, is defined by the American National Standards Institute as using handlebars for steering while being operated by one rider. ATVs are available with three, four or six wheels and are often driven for recreation. Several locations in southern Texas offer off-road trails made specifically with ATV rider enjoyment in mind.
South Carolina offers the Palmetto Trail, an innovative new idea in outdoor hiking. The idea of the 425-mile system of trails spanning the state was first conceived in 1994. Since then, close to 290 miles worth of trail have been built and more is constantly on the way. It is one of just 16 cross-state trails across the country and is known for being one of the most scenic in the Southeast
The next time you're headed to Las Vegas and are looking for an outdoor adventure, head out to Mt. Charleston in the Spring Mountains range. About 40 minutes from downtown Las Vegas, Mt. Charleston is an ambitious hike. Your journey on the South Loop trail route is 17 miles round-trip and is a good day hike.
