The Denton Creek of Roscommon County, Michigan, offers plenty of space for off-road vehicles and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) alike. Connecting to the Leota and St. Helen trails, Denton Creek offers dozens of miles of trail to explore.
Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a haven for all-terrain and off-road vehicle (ATV and ORV) riders. Watersmeet, Michigan, located in Gogebic County, offers access to many scenic ATV routes. ATVs legally can be driven on county road shoulders to pick up main and fringe trails. Varied accommodations, including small hotels, historic hotels and a large casino hotel, as well as vacation homes and rental cabins, are available for trail users. There's also a public campground.
With an abundance of lakes and forest in Northern Michigan, the region offers ATV riders a diverse selection of trails that can be easily combined with a camping. And with Northern Michigan surrounded by the Great Lakes, the opportunity to park the ATV near the beach is usually not far away.
Michigan is home to over 3,100 miles of designated trails and routes available for use by off-road vehicles (ORVs) that are 50 inches in width or less. This includes both dirt bikes and ATVs. Because the designated trails system is a "fees for services" program, an ORV license (commonly called an ORV sticker) is needed to legally operate on these trails.
Michigan offers 93 all-terrain vehicle and off-road vehicle trails throughout the state, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. There are no ATV trails in Michigan's southern Lower Peninsula and very few in the central portion of the state. Most are scattered throughout the northern Lower and Upper Peninsulas where ample woods and open space provide land for rural ATV trails.
Baldwin, Michigan is in Lake County, in the Huron-Manistee National Forest. Riding all-terrain vehicles in the national forest requires the use of a DOT-approved helmet, eye protection, gloves, boots, long pants and long-sleeved shirts. In addition, you must have a current ORV license. More than 300 miles of ATV trails exist in the national forest. Other activities in the area include hiking, mushrooming, fishing and snowmobiling. Camping is available in the area as well. Most ATV trails reference the Carrieville Campground for good access to all of the trails.
Michigan state is home to vast amounts of wilderness and open lands. There are so many trails to ride---either on horseback, ATV, motorcycle or ORV---that few take the time to tell anyone else about the trails. Michigan recognizes any motor vehicle designed for cross-country use, like an ATV, as an ORV (Off-Road Vehicle). Also included in the ORV designation are motorcycles, vehicles with multi-wheel/track design, and other mechanically powered vehicles. ORV laws in Michigan apply to all off-road vehicles no matter their size or type.
