Buena Vista is nestled at the foothills of the Rocky Mountain's Collegiate Peaks. The town is in Chaffee County, Colorado and is about two and a half hours southwest of Denver. Enjoy various trails for ATV riders filled with sights such as valleys, alpine lakes and vistas. Aside from nature sights, the trails are rich in history where you may encounter remnants of old mining towns. The Buena Vista Area Chamber of Commerce states that the trails are typically open about nine to 11 months out of the year.
For those who enjoy the feeling of ATVing in the snow or just want to give their equipment a workout in every season, there are several trails open year-round in Colorado. Many go unserviced by the land management organizations that oversee them, but this means that primitive camping and restrictions are kept at a minimum. As always, remember to leave nothing but tracks when you visit these areas.
The Colorado River is the seventh longest river in the United States. It flows through Utah, Nevada, Arizona, California and Texas and is more than 1,400 miles in length, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. There are numerous paddling trails along the river that range in length and difficulty. A paddling trail is a frequently used paddling route along a river. Estes Park, Colorado sits along the Big Thompson River, northwest of Denver and west of Loveland. At an elevation of 7,522 feet and a population of 6,286, Estes Park is the eastern gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. While ATVs are not allowed within Rocky Mountain National Park, there are several trails in Roosevelt National Forest and to the west at Grand Lake. For ATV riders, there are numerous trails in and around Pagosa Springs that combine stunning landscapes and the excitement of the outdoors, all with a touch of isolation.
Devotees of four-wheel off-road vehicles find plenty of trails to ride in Colorado. Trails are found near the capital city of Denver as well as more remote, rugged areas cut by magnificent mountain peaks. Regardless of where you ride, you should be able to find Colorado trails that range from mild to wild -- viewing historic trails, tunnels, even a glacier.
Nestled between the Rio Grande and San Juan National Forests in Southwestern Colorado, the once-thriving mining town of Silverton is far enough removed from the developments on the Rockies' eastern slope to prevent day trips for Denver's weekend warriors. ATV riders willing to make the six- or seven-hour drive, however, are rewarded with a network of ATV-accessible trails peppered with historic abandoned mines and breathtaking views of the Colorado Rockies.
